On February 11, 2017, the Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network held its first Valentine's Soirée at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. More than 400 guests attended the event and helped to raise more than $100,000 for the John May Farm Safety Fund, a joint program of Bassett Healthcare Network and the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) that helps local farms become safer places to live and work.
The fund is named for Dr. May, whose pioneering work on preserving the health of agricultural laborers laid the foundation that resulted in NYCAMH. During the soirée, current NYCAMH director, Dr. Julie Sorensen, spoke about Dr. May's achievements, and Joshua Truman, executive director of Friends of Bassett, presented the Mays with framed souvenirs of the event. Mr. Truman thanked all who supported the safety fund by attending, noting that "The proceeds of this year's event will have a profound impact on the safety of our local farmers."
Raffle sales and the live auction contributed close to $27,000 to the total amount raised for farm safety projects.
Although the soirée is over for this year, you can still help farmers in your area by making a gift to the John May Farm Safety Fund through the Friends of Bassett: Call (607) 547-3928, email firstname.lastname@example.org, or make a gift online.
