Lead Gift from Community Foundation Helps Valley Residential Services Expand Assisted-Living Facility

A leadership gift from the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties is helping Valley Residential Services (VRS) to expand its assisted-living facility in Herkimer, New York. The current facility houses 48 seniors in an apartment complex that offers three levels of care and three meals a day, transportation to appointments, a hair salon, educational center, outdoor gazebo, and more. The complex is fully occupied with a substantial waiting list, which is what prompted the organization to expand.
The foundation presented its check to VRS at a ground-breaking ceremony in late November. Construction began later that day. The new wing will add 14 units to the existing facility, each of which can accommodate couples.
While the new apartments will offer some lovely amenities to new residents, such as walk-in closets, the most important thing the new facility will provide to residents is a measure of independence. More than 700 individuals in Herkimer County need some assistance with care, and they can get it at VRS without entirely relinquishing their independence.
Services offered in the new wing include medication management, housekeeping, and assistance with activities of daily living.
The new wing will include a fitness and wellness center open to all residents.
Additional support for the expansion project was provided by a generous gift from the Kinney Drugs Foundation.
